Youths U12

Junior U12 squads

Aims and Objectives

  • Help children to discover an exciting team sport
  • Develop a lifelong love of sport
  • Develop core individual and team skills
  • Teach children the values of respect and equality
  • Teach players how to train
  • Prepare players for the next stage of 11-a-side competitive hockey
  • Above all – have fun

Membership Matters

  • All players must complete a registration form
  • Subscriptions £40 per year
  • Subscriptions due by middle of October (or when joining if later)
  • Everyone welcome, just turn up at the Participation Centre of your choice
  • New members are “buddied” with an existing member
  • New players may attend two “taster” coaching sessions before joining

Club Kit

  • Our youth playing kit, is available online from our kit partner Middlemiss Emroidery. www.middlemissembroidery.co.uk/
    • All kit can be viewed and purchased online.
    • More information can be viewed on the kit tab above

Shin pads

These are essential. You will not be allowed to train or play without them.

A properly fitted mouthguard (gum shield) is highly recommended. They require much less time and money than dental reconstruction.

Coaching Method

  • Key objective is to instill correct techniques and teamwork
  • Each session consists of a warm up, coaching of individual and team skills, followed by a game to put the learning into practice
  • Players graded by age and ability into training groups
  • Each player has the opportunity to participate in Festivals throughout the Borders with their Participation Centre
  • Players encouraged to practice at home – a tennis ball is fine watch the paint work and the windows!

  • All coaches with Fjordhus Reivers are Qualified Coaches who have undergone a PVG and are qualified in First Aid
  • All parents encouraged to assist – no playing experience required
  • Any parents or assistants are encouraged and advised of coaching qualifications

Our Approach

  • All players play 6-a-side mini-hockey at Festivals
  • Emphasis is on fun, safety and trying out skills
  • There are no winners or recording of results
  • Rules of Mini Hockey apply – rules are sympathetically applied
  • Teams are mixed

Who we play against

  • Players have the opportunity to play in Participation Festivals organised by the Borders Hockey Development team
  • The Programme of Festivals can be found on the Borders Hockey development website

Selection and Organisation

  • The Coach will request availability 1-4 weeks in advance and you will be emailed on the timing and location early in the week before each Festival.
  • Any changes in the final week should be sent to your Coach
  • Contact your coach with any problems or questions on the day of the match or tournament.
  • Players should arrive ready to play at least 15 minutes before the start

Travel and Directions

  • Parents are encouraged to come to training and to Festivals to support
  • Travel is direct
  • Advise the coach if children are being taken or collected by someone other than a parent
  • Directions will be provided by links to other clubs’ websites

What to Bring

  • Mouth guard and shin pads (strongly recommended)
  • Club kit should be worn to all training and Festivals where possible
  • Warm and waterproof clothing for between matches
  • Plenty to drink
  • Healthy Snacks
